The original castle-like building now contains pricy restaurants and overblown function rooms leading out to a pretty garden.

The hotel occupies the fourth to 37th floor of the building but, even so, higher floor rooms are welcoming of light with open city views. This is a well-run and convenient Shanghai business hotel. The raised bayfront pool offers view of the arcing sands and the resort rising up the hill.

Expect a flat-screen TV, DVD player, gauzy mosquito net, wooden furniture, almirah, work desk with two multi-pin electrical sockets, a bathtub with a window looking onto garden and free WiFi. Mark this down on your list of the best Shanghai boutique hotels. Grab a taxi and head off.

The adjoining International Convention Palace with the sq m Da Nang Ballroom that holds persons theatre style makes this a useful choice among the top Vietnam conference hotels with a resort setting.
